Every privacy claim a product can make is determined by where data travels. If media is uploaded to a cloud for classification, the vendor — and potentially its subprocessors — processes personal data. If the same classification runs on an NPU inside the storage appliance, the data path never leaves the device. This single architectural decision is what separates an AI NAS from a cloud-sync product with AI features.
For consumer products, privacy is a purchase driver that marketing can use credibly — “your photos never leave your home” is a checkable claim, not a slogan. For surveillance products it is stronger still: residential monitoring under GDPR is materially easier to sell when the video retention architecture is local by default. Several of our European security customers position their entire product line on this basis.
Ask the supplier three questions. Which AI features work with the network cable unplugged? Can the firmware be shipped with all cloud endpoints disabled? And what documentation exists — a data-flow diagram and a data-locality statement — to support your own privacy declarations? A manufacturer that owns its firmware can answer all three; an assembler reselling someone else’s platform generally cannot.
